Syncing references to game objects?

I'm making a multiplayer RPG, and I'm currently working on the inventory system. The problem I'm having is that I am storing inventory contents in a GameObject[] array, and can't work out how to transfer this array of GameObjects from server to client. I tried using SyncLists but there isn't much documentation on them and, while they may be able to do what I need, I couldn't work it out.
